Portrait Of A Henna Artist is a mini documentary about Melissa Addams. A well known henna artist around the world.
I had the chance to meet Melissa Addams while living aboard my sailboat in Miami. Fascinated about her talent as a henna artist, I decided to shoot a mini documentary about her and her henna art. Time was limited for this project, but I hope you will enjoy it.
Portrait Of A Henna Artist
Melissa is a well known henna artist all over the world. She has over ten years experience and traveled in many countries to share her talent. I was always fascinated about the henna designs, but I thought I will have to travel to India for such thing. She is a Miami and Orlando – Florida based artist, but she travels anywhere in the world.
I was lucky to meet her while living in Miami aboard my sailboat. So I decided to contact her and ask if she would let me film her at work. I love people passionate about their craft and I was happy she agreed to let me make this mini documentary.
What Is Henna
Henna is a dye prepared from plants. It can also refer to the temporary body art resulting from the staining of the skin from the dyes. Henna was used in the Arabian Peninsula, Indian subcontinent, Near and Middle East, Carthage, other parts of North Africa and the Horn of Africa. This temporary body art was usually used for different celebration events. But I will let you enjoy the video and Melissa will explain a little more about henna and mehndi.
Making The Film
The intention at first was to make something to participate in a film festival. Unfortunately the time I had available for this project, and the limited electricity aboard my sailboat didn’t helped much. I still love the result, even though it’s not exactly how I pictured it at first. The best part it’s that I got to enjoy watching Melissa at work, and I was impressed with her skills. She is also a talented painter.
